Stalemate for Harps in Limerick
Limerick 37……1
Finn Harps……..1
Chris McNulty reports from Jackman Park
Good Friday proved to be not-so-good Friday for the loyal followers of
Finn Harps who made the long trip to Jackman Park as they watched in
frustration as a 58th minute equaliser from David Wall gave Limerick
37 a share of the spoils against Paul Hegarty's Harps.
Having taken a while to get into their stride, Harps broke the
deadlock through Declan Boyle just before the half-hour mark and, from
here, the visitors should have went on to register at least another
goal before the break.
However, a couple of wayward attempts at goal and the failure of
Polish referee Tomas Superczynski to spot a hit on Harps danger man
Conor Gethins inside the box ensured that Boyle's goal was the only
separator at the break.
Harps would go on to rue their lack of potency in the final third when
some sloppy defending allowed David Wall to fire home an equaliser for
the league's new boys with the second half strike meaning Harps had to
settle for a point.
The Shannonsiders enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, but
didn't really force James Gallagher into action despite enjoying a lot
of possession. David Wall failed to hit the target with a back-post
header and Gordon Simms recovered well to dispossess Padraig Moran
after losing possession to the former Derry City striker.
Harps, however, soon made the hosts pay when they edged into a 28th
minute lead. Shaun Holmes' perfectly-flighted corner from the right
flank was met by the head of Declan Boyle, the big Killybegs man
nodding home from an unmarked position at the back post.
Conor Gethins was then denied what seemed a certain spot kick when the
Lifford man was brought to ground by Limerick defender Nigel Keady,
but the match official waved play-on, much to the Harps man's
annoyance.
Barry Curran just failed to connect with a Jonathan Minnock crossfield
ball moments later, while the former Coleraine man was also cursing
the playing surface when a bobble agonisingly deprived him of centring
for the inrushing Gethins.
The second half started in a rather lacklustre fashion but 13minutes
in the hosts got back on level terms. It was a strike that the Harps
defence will not want to be reminded of in a hurry.
James Gallagher punched a cross from Molan into the path of Kevin
Waters, who watched Gordon Simms take his effort off the goal line.
Simms' clearance was a weak one however and succeeded only in finding
the gleeful David Wall, who drove past the unsighted Gallagher from
just inside the box.
Thereafter, it was the hosts who looked most likely to strike a winner
with their best chance falling to Padraig Moran with 20minutes
remaining. The former Derry City man failed to trouble Gallagher after
being played in by a neat pass from substitute Anthony Glasheen.
