Dundalk made the trip to the North West in confident tune after a mid-week win over table-toppers, Limerick. John Gill's men also entered last night's contest unbeaten in three.
The Oriel Park resident grabbed the initiative with half-time approaching. Thirty-eight minutes had passed when Sean Finn unleashed a brilliant volley beyond James Gallagher into the bottom corner.
To be fair, it was a deserved goal as Dundalk had the better of the play in the opening exchanges and almost led when Peter Hynes' shot was well kept out by Gallagher, who returned to the Harps line-up, having missed Tuesday's defeat to Shamrock Rovers through suspension.
Player-manager Anthony Gorman made one other change, bringing himself back into the starting eleven in place of the absent Sean Cooney.
Gorman watched his 25 yard free being saved by Chris Bennion and Conor Gethins was thwarted by Flanagan for what were Harps' best two openings in a disappointing opening half.
On the stroke of the interval, the home side had a penalty claim turned down by match referee Tony Kelly. Jonathan Minnock's left footed cross came off the arm of Keith Dunne, but the match official waved play on, much to the discontent of the home support.
Four minutes into the second half, the discontentment doubled – as did Dundalk's lead.
Christy Doran – recalled from a loan spell at Kilkenny - swung in a corner from the right hand side and Robert Mc Auley pounced on extremely slack marking to head home number two.
Conor Gethins responded for Harps with a cracking half-volley that went into the River End goal via the underside of the crossbar to breathe some life back into the Harps challenge.
Unfortunately they couldn't forge a breakthrough for the elusive second and again the home support departed amidst disappointing scenes.
Harps' next outing is next Saturday night when Athlone Town come to the Twin Towns – a game which will mark the season's half-way point.
Before that, though, there will be more pressing issues for the club's supporters to see to with an information night for the shareholders scheduled to take place this coming Wednesday night.

Finn Harps Dot Com Man of the Match: Dundalk's Sean Finn was outstanding and caused the Harps rearguard all sorts of problems with a fine display from the middle of the park. Alongside him, Robbie Dunne was also a constant threat while Paul Marney performed admirably at the back.
For Harps, Jonathan Minnock again fought hard in the middle of the field and Shaun Mc Gowan was again solid at right back.
Deployed in an uncustomary wide berth, Conor Gethins was Harps' best attacking threat last night. The Lifford man was full of effort and capped the evening off with a brilliant half-volley from almost 30 yards.
