UCD v Finn Harps – eircom League of Ireland Cup Quarter-Final – Belfield Park, Monday 2nd July 2007 – kick-off 7.45pm

Preview by Joe Doherty

Finn Harps increased their unbeaten league run to five games and are now unbeaten in seven games in all competitions after their 2-0 victory over Athlone Town at Finn Park on Friday night. Indeed, Paul Hegarty's side have only lost only once in the last dozen games and during that time have kept eight clean sheets. They go into tomorrow night's eircom league of Ireland Cup quarter-final game against UCD as one of the form sides in the country.

Harps have progressed to this stage of the competition having had home victories over Fanad United (2-0) and Sligo Rovers (3-2). UCD have reached the quarter-finals by beating Kildare County on penalties after a 0-0 draw at station road in the first round and followed this up winning by the only goal of the game at Richmond Park against St. Patrick's Athletic.

Tomorrow's game will mark the sixth game in just sixteen days for Harps, while Pete Mahon's UCD will go into the quarter-final tie well rested as they had no game at the weekend as their match with Cork City was postponed as the Rebel Army were on Intertoto Cup duty.

Harps, as has been the norm in recent weeks, have a number of injury worries going into the game. Michael Funston has been on the injury last for a number of months now and continues to receive treatment. He will be joined in the stands on Monday night by John O'Loughlin who limped out of the action in the first-half on Friday night with a hamstring injury. Tony Shields and Jonathan Minnock also picked up knocks are both are doubts for the trip to Dublin. Shaun Holmes, who sat on Friday's game through suspension, is available again. "We have a few options", said Hegarty, "but we'll have to wait until Monday to see how the boys are."

Hegarty was a member of the Derry City backroom staff who have won this League Cup competition for the past two year and wants to see the team he now manages to progress to the semi-finals. "We busted a gut at Finn Park against Sligo Rovers in the last round when we were 2-0 down at half-time and came back into the match and won it 3-2. So, I don't think we'll be going to Belfield to lie down."

Monday's meeting will be the first ever League Cup game between the two sides. The last time Harps and the students squared up in a knockout competition was back in 1998 when a Shane Bradley goal was enough to give Harps a 1-0 win in the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup at Belfield. That was the last time a Harps side won at Belfield. The travelling support will be hoping for a similar result on Monday.
