“Season Far From Over” says Harps Chairman
May 29, 2007
Finn Harps Chairman John Campbell has appealed to fans not to give up on this season following the clubs vital away win against Monaghan United last night. Finn Harps are currently 6 th in the table with 13 points from eleven games, a return that is well below what would have been hoped for by Donegal's senior team. However, the First Division season comprises 36 league games, with Harps only at the one-third mark, and with playoff places on offer down to third place in the table. Harps are effectively only 3 places and 10 points away from qualifying for the promotion playoffs.
Speaking to the clubs website John Campbell reminded the club's supporters that it was still very early in the season and again urged fans to keep up their support. “We're only one third through the season and what many people don't seem to realise is that third place in this league qualifies for the playoffs” he said. “People look at the table and at Dundalk's huge lead and seem to be thinking the season is over already. But in reality it's only just begun - there are 72 points still for us to play for!!”
Conceding that a return of just 13 points from the first 36 on offer was disappointing the Kilcar man was of the opinion that the performances of the team deserved a higher return. “Paul has the team playing very well, particularly over the last 6 or 7 games and we've been very unfortunate. We were playing good football and creating chances without getting the three points, so the win in Monaghan was vital” He added “We are now only 10 points behind the playoff places with two thirds of the season to go, and we have a huge game this weekend against the third placed team (Limerick 37). Any team which puts 2 or 3 victories together will be right up with a chance of promotion, so I want to tell fans that this season is far from over and their support is more vital than ever.”
The game this weekend is indeed vital for the Harps, as it rounds off a spell of 3 games in 7 days, and a week which Harps will hope to end up even closer to that vital third place. “Being 18 points behind the leaders is disheartening, however the team are going well and this Friday is another huge match for the lads so we need the fans to get out and support us yet again” concluded the Chairman.
